Recent star formation in local, morphologically disturbed spheroidal galaxies on the optical red sequence

چکیده

We combine Galaxy Evolution Explorer [(GALEX); ultraviolet (UV)] and Sloan Digital Sky Survey [(SDSS); optical] photometry to study the recent star formation histories of ∼100 field galaxies on the optical red sequence, a large fraction of which exhibit widespread signs of disturbed morphologies in deep optical imaging that are consistent with recent merging events. More than 70 per cent of bulge-dominated galaxies in this sample show tidal features at a surface brightness limit of μ ∼ 28 mag arcsec−2. We find that, while they inhabit the optical red sequence, they show a wide spread in their UV colours (∼4 mag), akin to what has been discovered recently in the general early-type population. A strong correlation is found between UV colour and the strength of the tidal distortions, such that the bluest galaxies are more distorted. This strongly suggests that the blue UV colours seen in many nearby early types are driven by (low-level) merger-induced star formation within the last 3 Gyrs, contributing less than 10 per cent of the stellar mass. If the ongoing mergers in this sample, which have a median mass ratio of 1:4, are representative of the nearby red merger population, then less than ∼25 per cent of the new stellar mass in the remnants is typically added through merger-induced star formation. While the dust extinction in the interstellar medium (ISM) in these galaxies is small (EISM B−V < 0.1), the local dust content of the star-forming regions is, on average, a factor of ∼3 higher. Finally, we use our theoretical machinery to provide a recipe for calculating the age of the most recent star formation event (t2) in nearby (z 0.1) red early-type galaxies: log t2(Gyrs) ∼ 0.6±0.03 [(NUV − u) − (g − z) − 1.73±0.03 ], where NUV, u, g and z are the observed photometric magnitudes of the galaxies in the GALEX/SDSS

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups

It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...

Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I

We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...

The Optical-Infrared Colour Distribution of a Statistically-Complete Sample of Faint Field Spheroidal Galaxies

In hierarchical models, where spheroidal galaxies are primarily produced via a continuous merging of disk galaxies, the number of intrinsically red systems at faint limits will be substantially lower than in “traditional” models where the bulk of star formation was completed at high redshifts. In this paper we analyse the optical–nearinfrared colour distribution of a large flux-limited sample o...

A coincidence of disturbed morphology and blue UV colour: minormergerdriven star formation in earlytype galaxies at z 0.6

We exploit multi-wavelength photometry of early-type galaxies (ETGs) in the COSMOS survey to demonstrate that the low-level star formation activity in the ETG population at intermediate redshift is likely to be driven by minor mergers. Splitting the ETGs into galaxies that show disturbed morphologies indicative of recent merging and those that appear relaxed, we find that ∼ 32% of the ETG popul...

The Ages of Disturbed Field Elliptical Galaxies. Ii. Central Properties

The formation of elliptical galaxies via the merger of gas-rich disks has received considerable attention in recent years, with many studies strongly supporting the merger hypothesis. When investigated in detail, the dynamics of a major merger that produces a high phase-space density of material (e.g., the center of an elliptical galaxy) invariably produces the ubiquitous signature of a central...
